Senators Seek to Strengthen AI Federal Guidance

New bipartisan legislation would codify safety standards for federal agencies.

Senator Mark Warner of Virginia and Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas introduced a bill this week that would require federal agencies to permanently enact the provisions of President Joe Biden’s executive order on the government’s use of artificial intelligence (AI).

The president signed a broad executive order early in the week that directs federal agencies to monitor the use of AI to prevent its greatest risks. Cybersecurity vulnerabilities, poor datasets perpetuating housing and financial discrimination, and data privacy issues are all pressing concerns surrounding AI. President Biden’s executive order outlined a number of ways his administration could collectively address those concerns.

Though the president’s executive order cited AI safety standards developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, it did not require his administration to implement those guidelines. The legislation proposed by Senators Warner and Moran would create legal grounds necessary to officially require compliance. This would ensure that the current and future administrations utilize the same policies in their interactions with AI.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Senators Warner and Moran as they encourage support for the law that would ensure uniform federal agency compliance with AI security guidance.
  • For the president and officials in his administration as they seek to secure AI implementation for national and cyber security.
  • For discernment for federal agency leaders as they utilize AI security guidelines.
